I Was A Negro in the South for 30 Days
By Ray Sprigle
1947: Ray Sprigle, a white journalist from Pittsburgh, goes undercover for his latest story. With some help from the NAACP, he manages to travel and survive the Jim Crow South as a light-skinned black male. His 21-piece news exposé was the main topic of debate throughout the nation, but copies and content were banned below the Mason Dixon Line. (First five chapters)
Everything That Rises Must Converge
By Flannery O'Connor
Having spent most of her life in Milledgeville, Georgia , the themes of Mary Flannery O'Connor's work pull from her Christian faith, and the tall-tale traditions of the South. ‘Everything That Rises…’ is about a young man's trip to the ‘reducing class' (diet program) with his mother, that leads to a more than physical confrontation with a black mother and her small son.
Just Above My Head
By James Baldwin
Travel with us on a tour into the Deep South with gospel singer, Arthur Montana; his older brother, Hall; and their piano-player, Peanut . In this haunting excerpt from Baldwin's novel, their journey ends with devastating results.
